For its annual Summer Edition drink, Red Bull announced this week that they’re introducing a new Dragon Fruit flavor. The brand describes it in a press release as “an invigorating red berry and exotic taste,” which contains “a burst of red berries with a hint of plum and notes of florals.”
Red Bull adds: “The drink’s bright magenta color looks gorgeous when paired with a summer mocktail.” The new Dragon Fruit flavor will come in a 12-ounce bottle and the brand’s signature 8.4-ounce can. The can contains 27 grams of sugar plus 80 milligrams of caffeine—almost the same amount of caffeine as a home-brewed cup of coffee.
Red Bull’s nutrition information is often the dividing factor between those who drink it and those who avoid it. Still, there’s no doubt the brand knows how to pique plenty of puckers. This energy drink of Austrian origin entered the U.S. in 1997 and reports having sold 7.9 billion cans in 2020, with 3 billion of those in the U.S. alone.
Calling the Summer Edition Dragon Fruit flavor “a great accompaniment to any adventure beyond the ordinary and all summer activities,” Red Bull is clearly appealing to our collective pent-up lust for new experiences as the COVID-19 pandemic goes on. They also seem to be tapping the growing understanding that everyone craves excitement and the chance to tackle new dares. “Summer is about adventure,” their release reads, “and all fun adventures begin with the thirst for something new.”
Red Bull’s Summer Edition Dragon Fruit flavor will hit Walmart shelves on March 29 and will roll out to other retailers on April 26.
