Look, we’ve all gone a bit stir-crazy during lockdown, and it’s undoubtedly led to some interesting food creations in the past year.
It’s part of the joy of cooking: coming up with new recipe ideas, trying things out, seeing if opposites attract.
One company, however, has taken this philosophy to new heights with what some might consider a food crime worthy of a trial at The Hague – but others might just give a go.
Recipe box company Gousto has come up with an experimental new range of burgers which includes peanut butter and jelly, marmite-glazed chicken – and a cream tea burger.
It’s real: the company has, in its own words, thrown caution to the wind, and is “embracing some of the country’s most-loved flavours in the most unexpected ways”.
Gousto has teamed up with iconic Cornish clotted cream producer Rodda’s and is offering the Rodda’s Cream Tea Burger.
The recipe sees customers drizzle clotted cream over a beef patty, topped with homemade tomato jam – but we won’t even start on the ridiculous order of things, with their Devon-ish cream first faux pas.
Gousto described the burger as a “showstopper”. It’s certainly eye-catching – except for the cringe-worthy picture depicting the burger with the cream on first.
There’s even a meat-free version, meaning vegetarians can try out this utterly bizarre recipe idea.
Gousto food director Kathryn Huxtable said: “Our Wild Buns range throws caution to the wind, embracing some of the country’s most-loved flavours in the most unexpected ways.
“We’ve watched as the nation gets more adventurous with its cooking, and our chefs are putting this to the test with the new burger recipes.
“Once you’ve dared to try them, you’ll realise they are completely irresistible, as well as super simple to whip up, with our easy-to-follow recipe cards.”
Rodda’s Cream Tea Burger is part of a new ‘wild buns’ range, which will be available from June 5.
