Allergies on the rise

Allergies are a growing public health concern. The rate of food allergies among children has increased 18% from 1997 to 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1).

More of the population has food allergies than ever before – and around the world, they are sending more and more people to hospital…data found anaphylaxis cases on the rise in the US, Australia and Europe, among other regions…in the US, hospital visits for food allergy increased threefold from 1993 to 2006. Between 2013 and 2019, England saw a 72% rise in the number of hospital admissions for children caused by anaphylaxis [2]. In the US, it is now estimated that over 10 per cent of the adult population has an allergy to peanuts, shellfish, dairy or another food…in the UK, the past three decades have seen hospital admissions for food allergies rise fivefold [3].

“That food allergies have risen is unquestionably the case, to an absolutely crazy extent” Graham Rook, emeritus professor of medical microbiology at University College London.

Some people with a tree nut allergy may be allergic to more than one type of tree nut. While others may only be allergic to one type of tree nut [4]. Allergies to peanuts are a major public health concern. Recent data suggests that the incidence is increasing and currently 1–2 % of Americans, or nearly 30 million people, are allergic to peanuts [5].

Taking all this into account, product formulators need to have viable options for making peanut flavoured products that can have a broader appeal. This is why Novotaste has created a variety of popular nut-inspired flavours, containing no allergens.
