Move over Mr Whippy – there’s a new frozen dessert in town. Originally found on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand, ice cream rolling has exploded onto the foodie scene this year, with stalls up and down the country showing off their ‘stir fried ice cream’ techniques.

New food festival Manchester Eats – taking place this July 7-8 in Manchester’s Heaton Park – will be awash with the top food trends and the latest in culinary experimentation. North West ice cream rolling experts The Ice Alchemists are attending the festival to showcase their skills in this exciting technique.

Denise Harris, Director of Manchester Eats organiser SK Events says:

“Manchester Eats is all about bringing the height of food fashion to the people of Manchester. We have top name-chefs, expert-led masterclasses and dishes that will surprise and delight. This is not your average food festival! We spotted ice cream rolling when it first appeared in the UK and the phenomenon definitely isn’t showing signs of slowing down. We knew that The Ice Alchemists were a great fit for our fresh-thinking festival and we are pleased to welcome them as part of a huge line up of mouthwatering magic.”

Becky Wood, Owner of The Ice Alchemists says:

“We first came across ice cream rolling in 2016 and straight away we started experimenting. We are still one of the only outlets in the UK delivering this special dessert, and we do it in a way that considers both quality and the environment.

“We use fresh local milk from Jersey cows in Cumbria, and only plant-based emulsifiers and stabilisers. A lot of other ice cream rolling mixes contain E-numbers and palm oil – but we want our customers to be reassured that what they are consuming is chemical and cruelty free!”

Ice cream rolling uses a liquid base, which is spread on a ‘freeze plate’ – essentially creating an ice cream pancake which can then be rolled up into beautiful delicate tubes. There is art not only in the stunning colour combinations of the dessert, but also the diversity of flavours that are available. The Ice Alchemists are promising a special treat for Manchester Eats with traditional Manchester Tart flavoured ice cream rolls.

Tim Coulston, Director at Nibble Corporation and local food expert says:

“Ice cream rolls are fast becoming the coolest food trend in the UK – I mean, who doesn’t want to design their own flavour, with fresh fruits or their favourite confectionary brand, watch it being frozen in front of them, and snap a quick video for Insta?!

“Originally from Thailand, ‘stir-fried ice cream’ proved a huge hit with both locals and tourists alike and the street-food snack soon travelled to New York and London where operators began putting their own twist on ice-cold classics. The Ice Alchemists’ ethical ingredients and recyclable packaging really take their product to the next level, placing their ice cream rolls at the heart of the environmental, health and wellness movements that are sweeping the UK consumer markets right now!”

Ice cream rolling is just one of the amazing spectacles at the inaugural Manchester Eats festival. There are already a host of exciting names on the exhibitor list, including Cottonopolis, Proove Pizza and Manchester Gin, with more being added each week in the run up to the weekend. Attendees to the festival will be able to attend free masterclasses in chocolate-making, vegetarian and vegan cooking, cooking for kids and more.

Official charity partners the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation will be providing an activity zone on both days with interactive, accessible sporting activities for both children and adults. The event also features a dedicated children’s village and live DJ sets.
