Is this most horrific food collab to ever been announced?

One of the most horrific food mash-ups every announced – a tomato sauce icecream – is on the cards.

Watties posted overnight on Facebook that it was teaming up with TipTop to make the limited edition dessert.

And on Friday, Watties marketing spokesman Ben Cochrane, from The Business Group, confirmed it was no April Fool’s joke, despite many online comments claiming that.

He said Watties and Fonterra were attempting to make tomato sauce icecream.

Whether they could make and sell it was yet to be confirmed.

“We are looking at doing a tub or maybe a Jelly Tip equivalent but really it is up to the boffins at Fonterra to see what they can do with icecream and tomato sauce.”

Cochrane said the idea came from seeing the Seven Sharp item where hosts tried tomato sauce on icecream.

He said he immediately contacted Fonterra (which owns Tip Top) and Fonterra immediately began investigating it.

“It’s gone from a bit of a joke on telly to actually we could make this product. I’m not sure how many people would buy it to be honest, but we are going to make it, sample it, and see where it goes.”

Fonterra said Tip Top experts would have a try at making tomato sauce ice cream on Monday.

“We will give it a go in the lab, but that is the extent of what we will be doing at this stage,” a spokeswoman said.

Watties’s Facebook post this morning had more than 21,000 comments and over 3,000 shares – most of which are understandably revolted by the thought of a tomato sauce icecream.

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” wrote one commenter.

“This is an abomination,” wrote another.

The product announcement came hot on the heels of a Watties press release which was sent out earlier in the week detailing the ways in which New Zealanders like to eat tomato sauce, one of which was on icecream.

“I find that so hard to believe,” said Hilary Barry when Jeremy Wells told her the news on Seven Sharp. “It makes me feel nauseous.”

"It makes me feel nauseous," said Hilary Barry.
“It makes me feel nauseous,” said Hilary Barry.

The hosts then took it upon themselves to taste test the concoction.

“It’s not bad. It’s quite spicy,” declared Wells.

“It’s sweet on sweet, you forget how much sugar is in tomato sauce,” observed Barry.

Wells continued to eat the bowl of tomato sauce icecream throughout the show.
