In this edition of “Is That a Thing?” we first looked at 3 nut butter alternatives, Black Bean Butter, Chickpea Butter and Beef Jerky Butter. Which of these is “A Thing?”
One of the newest trends in the great big world of peanut butter alternatives is chickpea butter. It’s great for those with nut allergies because it’s completely nut-free (and safe to bring for school lunch)! Chickpea butter is packed with protein and its mild sweet-and-salty flavor is also said to closely mimic the flavor of actual peanut butter. Just like peanut butter, it comes in creamy or crunchy varieties.
The next fall food trend we looked at is the pumpkin spice arms race. Every year, more and more products come to market featuring that quintessential spice blend that screams “fall.” The contenders: pumpkin-spiced pizza, cheese puffs and orange juice. So, which of these pumpkin spice-flavored products is “A Thing?”
That’s right, pumpkin spice has made its way to the pizzeria! One national pizza chain has become infamous for this pumpkin-spiced creation. The pizza is made with pumpkin pie filling instead of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and then topped with dollops of more pumpkin pie-spiced pumpkin filling. If you can’t find this seasonal treat at your local pizza place, you can make it at home by adding spiced pumpkin to a classic white pie.
Our final food trend is a pack of 3 unusual lattes. We looked at a kale latte, a tahini latte and a latte made with lard. Which one of these crazy drinks is “A Thing?”
Tahini is a paste of ground toasted sesame seeds and is typically used as a condiment in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and North African cuisines. Adding tahini to a classic latte adds a warm and savory depth of flavor. The toasty taste of sesame makes it perfect for a chilly fall day. If you’re not ready for a hot drink, this latte would be great iced too! Want to give it a try? Check out this recipe!
