The trend for coffee in alcoholic beverages looks set to continue and a number of producers are hoping to tap in with their latest innovations.

From Mast-Jagermeister UK there is Jagermeister Cold Brew Coffee, which is a global line extension for the brand. The UK is one of the first launch markets and it will hit the USA over the next few months.

The innovation sees the classic Jagermeister recipe of 56 herbs and spices fused with cold-brewed Arabica coffee and a hint of cacao to create a new Jagermeister ice-cold shot experience.

The launch is being supported with a £2.5 million marketing campaign including national advertising

UK innovation controller, Tim Hawley, said: “We have been developing Jagermeister Cold Brew Coffee behind the scenes for a number of years, working alongside baristas, roasters and barmen through many iterations to create a perfectly balanced fusion of original Jagermeister. Jagermeister Cold Brew Coffee has an intricate coffee flavour profile complemented by the classic Jagermeister taste – served perfectly as an ice-cold shot.”

The newcomer is priced £18 for 50cl and it is 33% abv.

Another coffee-based drink comes from Latvian brand Riga Black Balsam, which brought out the fifth version of the ancient beverage at the start of the summer: Riga Black Balsam Espresso.

Maris Kalnins, global brand director, said: “Including coffee in alcoholic beverages is a very current trend worldwide. In numerous bars, restaurants and cafes, these drinks are among the top five in bartenders’ choice.  With creating the Espresso version of Riga Black Balsam, we have combined tow highly valued tastes of consumers: the unique taste of the legendary bigger and the strong, saturated espresso flavour.”

The Espresso variant is made using the balsam extract found in the basic composition of the original drink. As an upgrade, Arabica coffee bean extract and cinnamon extract are added. The coffee beans used in the beverage have a strong taste, aroma and pleasant aftertaste that resembles black chocolate.

Riga Black Balsam Espresso is priced the same as the original balsam and it has a strength of 40% abv, packaged in 0.5 litre natural clay bottles.

Meanwhile The Island Rum Company is celebrating the UK launch of Black Tears, a dry spiced rum from Cuba which is spiced with coffee and cacao. The rum is said to have a low sugar content, which sets it apart from other spiced rums. Instead of vanilla flavours it offers notes of coffee, tobacco and cacao.

The drink is avaiulable from Amazon, Whisky Exchange and Masters of Malt, with an rrp of £34.99.

And last month saw the launch of the premium coffee liqueur from New Zealand, Quick Brown Fox.

The drink is described as “balancing complex notes of coffee “with a clever hint of cinnamon in its tail”.

The producer uses a blend of fair trade and organic roasted coffees from farms in Sumatra, Columbia and Papua New Guinea, along with a dash of cinnamon from India.

The 20% abv liqueur is recommended served as a digestif neat or on the rocks but it can also be used in cocktails and desserts.

Founder, Arjun Haszard, said: “I found myself curiously obsessing over coffee, and all its complexities. It was an incredibly difficult path to create a coffee liqueur with nothing artificial but what we have created is truly distinctive and an experience for the palate.”
