While a lot of Americans are currently aboard the hard seltzer bus with drinks like White Claw and Natural Light’s latest offering, there’s another trend that seems to be catching on with coffee drinkers.
With Jagermeister having already pushed their own brand of coffee-based liqueur and both PBR and La Colombe having also clambered upon the java bandwagon, MillerCoors’ Blue Moon brand seemed a perfect fit.
Coffee and boozy beverages have intertwined occasionally in the past, with various recipes calling for Bailey’s in addition to the whiskey and stout. Other cocktails have relied upon the dark roasted tang of coffee as well, but now it looks like beer is the latest beverage to adopt the coffee bean. Though the usual blend of beer and coffee calls for dark, thick beers — Blue Moon’s Iced Coffee Blonde is different.
For one, Blue Moon Iced Coffee Blonde will be caffeine-free, which is probably a daring move in a market obsessed with getting a good buzz on. However, it looks like the blue-and-beige brand is more interested in selling a decently strong beer with a palatable coffee taste rather than selling an energy drink in a can. Executive Bryan Ferschinger told Food & Wine, “It was important for us to brew a coffee beer with a twist like our other Blue Moon brews. Our Blue Moon Iced Coffee Blonde is made with Mandaria Barvaria hops and has a golden straw appearance with bright coffee flavor and aroma, for a balanced taste and clean finish. It is bright with a twist of flavor that anyone can enjoy.”
Given the immense growth of the coffee-flavored product market — as Ferschinger points out, the market is saturated with everything coffee-flavored from granola to ice cream. It seems like simple common sense and economics that are spurring brews like the Iced Coffee Blonde and La Colombe Hard Cold Brew Coffee forward.
Just keep in mind if you’re a total caffeine freak, you might have to take a pass on the Blue Moon Iced Coffee Blonde. But if your love of coffee is more about the signature taste rather than the energy boost, this might just be the cold one for you.
