A small 100 Mile House bakery that makes more than 80 different flavours of marshmallows is hoping to spread her treats to a wider audience starting with the Kamloops online farmers’ market this weekend.
Julia Gordon created Lolly’s Baking back in 2016, naming the company after her mother, Dolores “Lolly” Carter, who was dear to her.
With a typically slower winter season, she’s branching out from the Cariboo region into other markets and will be showing her marvellous marshmallows on the Kamloops Craft and Vendor and Online Market, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.
She makes roughly 200 to 300 marshmallows a month and uses a community kitchen in 100 Mile House to create them.
Gordon started off with four flavours of marshmallows, “and I’ve determined any dessert you can think of in the world I want to put into a marshmallow,” she said.
There’s an ever-growing inventory of marshmallow flavours. Popular ones for fall include pumpkin spice and chai spice, but she tries to create at least two new flavours a month, she said.
A fan favourite is also a s’more-style marshmallow, complete with chocolate coating and sprinkled with graham crackers.
“People love that it’s an instant s’more,” Gordon said.
Gordon started baking as a stress relief, and her mother loved her baked goods. When Carter got sick with ovarian cancer, the goods were one of the things she enjoyed eating while getting chemotherapy treatments, she said.
She died in 2014 but Gordon’s love of baking carried on.
She starting selling baked goods at the 100 Mile farmers’ market, but that quickly grew to online shipments across Canada, she said.
“My end game is to have my own storefront one day. How that looks is still up in the air but that is the goal,” she said.
